Rights to marry and have a family

Marriage is the coming together of two mature adults, usually with the aim of having a family.

Marriage gives you a partner for life who will be by your side through good times and bad. It gives you a person who will be there with you through your life struggles. © Caio. Photo CC.

Marriage teaches you that you can cherish love forever. A long-term commitment that can give you the opportunity to grow closer with someone you love every day, marriage is more than just a physical union; it is also a spiritual and emotional union.

Denying people access to marriage denies them the status and dignity of being ordinary citizens in society.

As Pakistani drafter Begum Shaista Ikramullah put it, it was imperative that the people of the world recognize the existence of a code of civilized behavior that would apply not only in international relations, but also in domestic affairs.

To conclude, the right to marry and found a family is a fundamental human right recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This right applies to all individuals regardless of gender, race, religion, or nationality, and is essential for individual happiness and well-being, as well as the stability and development of society.
