The Sewing and Fashion Design Skills Project offered the opportunity to numerous women from a migrant background to exercise their sewing skills and to showcase their creations (stuffed animals, decorations, handbags), allowing potential recruiters and buyers to appreciate the displayed products and recognize the skills of these migrant women.
An event was organized at the Valletta Design Cluster on December 12th, open to the general public. Led by the Migrant Women Association Malta (MWAM) Studio, an association that assists migrant women with the aim of helping them integrate into Maltese society and thus enter the job market.
The sessions of this training were led by Tonya Legtinen and artist Sarah Portelli, during which the participants acquired and developed new sewing skills, on top of their personal experiences. They learned how to select the right materials, use a sewing machine, and even how to repair and reuse clothing, tapping into the circular economy.
Most of the women involved in the workshop do it out of passion, but they would love to be rewarded for their job. All items and on sale.
