About Cultural competence

Hafsa Adan on cultural competence

Think of a situation in your life in which you need to practice cultural competence.

Since I am living in a foreign country, I am everyday interacting with people belonging to different cultures. People with different ethnicities and followers of different religious faith.

The most important place where this interaction happens on a daily basis is at my workplace and the shelter I live in. That is where i need to practice my cultural competence with my home mates, my boss, my colleagues and co-workers.

To improve my cultural competence, I should inform myself more about other cultures, traditions and everyday life customs. I can do this either by using the internet, and searching for information, or by discussing with my friends.

Another aspect which is important is to be open to discover new things about other people, to try and understand why people can have different opinions when they are discussing the same situations.

Also sharing my own views and customs helps in building a good relationship with the others.

INTEGRATE BUT DON’T CHANGE YOUR CULTURE NEITHER YOUR RELIGION.( for the religion it’s up to you)

Your culture makes you who you are!
